Mabinay Caves and the Cross-Island Road to Bacolod
This page is for two kinds of driver: the one who wants a day of guided caving in Mabinay, the "Cave Capital of the Philippines", and the one who wants to drive the whole way across the island to Bacolod, perhaps for MassKara. Both use the same mountain road, so the notes on fuel, fog and trucks apply to each. Read the outside-province note before you plan a Bacolod run.
The road to Mabinay
Mabinay is about 87 km from Dumaguete, 2 to 2.5 hours by car. Drive north up the coast to Bais (about an hour), then turn west onto the Bais-Kabankalan Road, which climbs up through karst hills. It is paved and two-lane but winding; fog and rain are common, and you will spend time behind slow trucks. Fill the tank in Bais before you start the climb. On the mountain crossing itself the only fuel is the Petron and Shell on the highway in Mabinay town.
The caves
Mabinay has more than a hundred known caves. Three beginner caves in the Bulwang cluster are open to visitors with a guide:

Odloman, at 8.87 km the second-longest cave in the country, and Cayaso are for experienced cavers by arrangement only. A good order for the beginner trio is Panligawan first, for the light shaft, and Pandalihan last, when you no longer mind getting muddy. The guides also know which caves flood after rain, so listen to them on a wet day.
Fees and guides
Register at Bulwang or the municipal tourism office. Figures published in July 2024: a guide is about PHP 400 per group of up to 6, plus PHP 25 for each extra person; older reviews mention PHP 15 entry per cave. Helmets are provided. A contact number quoted for bookings is 0916 149 7616. Check all of this locally, because fees change.
What to bring
- Closed shoes with grip and long trousers
- A headlamp (hands free is much better than a phone torch)
- A change of clothes for after Pandalihan
- Water and cash in small bills
Mabinay Spring Resort
In Tadlong, Poblacion, the Mabinay Spring Resort has natural cold-spring pools, kayaking, a canopy walk and a zipline, and is a good place to rinse off the cave mud. It is open 8 am to 5 pm.

Getting there and parking
The caves are about 20 minutes from the Mabinay town terminal on paved and concrete road, so any car reaches them. A scooter is fine in dry weather. Mabinay town itself has food, fuel and the springs, which makes it the natural lunch stop whether you are caving or crossing the island.
The cross-island road to Bacolod
Dumaguete to Bacolod via Mabinay and Kabankalan is about 216-238 km and takes 5 to 6 hours of driving. It is the shortest of the three routes across the island and is well paved; the Mabinay stretch is the slow, twisty middle. Published breakdowns put Bacolod to Kabankalan at about 2 hours and Kabankalan to Dumaguete at about 3 hours; the Bais-Kabankalan mountain road itself is 75 km.

Stops along the way: Mabinay town for food, fuel and the springs; Kabankalan for fuel and fast food; then the flat cane plains north to Bacolod. If you would rather not drive, the Ceres Liner bus does the same route in about 6 hours including a stop at Mabinay, with 16-17 trips a day each way, at PHP 410 non-aircon or PHP 510 aircon (September 2026); check the operator's current schedule.
Coming back a different way
For a loop, return along the south coast: Bacolod to Kabankalan (about 95 km, 2 h), Kabankalan to Bayawan (95 km, 2 h), then Bayawan to Dumaguete (102 km, 1.5-2 h). See Bayawan and the Far South for what is on that stretch, including a waterfall right beside the Bayawan-Mabinay road.
Driving outside Negros Oriental

MassKara timing
Bacolod's MassKara Festival runs 1-18 October 2026. If you are driving over for it, book your Bacolod accommodation and your vehicle early, and allow extra time on the last stretch into the city.
Which vehicle to book
Match the vehicle to which of the two trips you are making.
- Caves day trip: any car reaches the caves. A Toyota Vios or Nissan Almera is comfortable for the 2-2.5 hours each way and easy on fuel.
- Scooter in dry weather only: a Yamaha NMAX 155 can do the caves on a dry day, but the mountain road collects fog and downpours, so check the forecast and skip it in the wet.
- Cross-island to Bacolod: for a 5-6 hour drive with luggage and possibly rain, book a Mitsubishi Montero or Toyota Innova. Both are more comfortable behind heavy trucks on the twisty middle section, where you will sit for long spells before a safe overtake.
