Bayawan, Niludhan Falls and the Far South
This guide is for drivers who want to go beyond the usual day-trip range: down the coast past Siaton to Bayawan City, out to the wide curtain of Niludhan Falls, and on to the white beach at Basay near the provincial border. It is best done as an overnight, and it doubles as the southern route into Negros Occidental if you are heading to Kabankalan or Bacolod.
The road south
From Dumaguete the coastal national highway runs south through Bacong, Dauin, Zamboanguita and Siaton, then on to Bayawan, paved and in good condition the whole way. Bayawan is 90-102 km and 2-2.5 hours from the city; Basay another 25 minutes to half an hour beyond. Fuel is plentiful as far as Dauin; fill up before the Siaton-Bayawan stretch, as stations are sparse until the Petron in Bayawan. Do not drive this road after dark: it is unlit and shared with animals, pedestrians and unlit motorcycles.

Bayawan City and its boulevard
Bayawan claims the longest boulevard in the Philippines, about 3 km of seafront where the town comes out to exercise, eat and watch the sunset. It is free and it is the natural place to end the day's drive. Bayawan has ATMs (BDO, BPI and others) and a Petron station, so it is the practical base for the far south; the city and the surrounding cane country are quieter and less touristed than the coast near Dumaguete.
Niludhan Falls
Niludhan is the reason most visitors come this far. It is a wide curtain waterfall, nicknamed a "mini Niagara", in Barangay Dawis on the Bayawan-Mabinay road about 45 minutes beyond Bayawan. The road is paved and the falls are right beside the highway, a short walk from where you park. Entrance is reported as free, though a small fee may exist, so have some coins ready. From Dumaguete it is roughly 3-3.5 hours, which is why it works best with a night in Bayawan.
The flow is strongest in the rainy season, when the curtain is at its widest, but the pool and rocks are safest in the dry season. Treat it as a look-and-swim-carefully stop rather than a place to jump.
Basay
Basay is the last town before the border with Negros Occidental, 115-120 km and 2.5-3 hours from Dumaguete. Camangyawon Beach is a long white-sand beach between two rivers beside the fish port, the kind of beach the south coast nearer the city does not have. About 10 km inland is an old open-pit copper mine with two lakes in the workings. Game fishing is offered locally. Fees for the beach and the mine were not confirmed at the time of writing, so ask in town. Basay's Kapaw festival falls on 16 March.
Tawo-Tawo Festival
Bayawan's Tawo-Tawo (scarecrow) festival is held on 18 February and celebrates the city's farming life, with scarecrow-themed street dancing. If your dates line up it is a good excuse to base yourself here; book rooms ahead, as the town fills.
On to Kabankalan and Bacolod
From Bayawan the highway continues west and north into Negros Occidental: about 95 km and 2 hours to Kabankalan, then roughly 95 km and another 2 hours across the flat cane plains to Bacolod. This is the southern of the two cross-island routes, the other being the mountain road via Mabinay described in the Mabinay guide. Many drivers go one way and return the other, and the two together make a satisfying two or three day loop. Bacolod's MassKara festival runs 1-18 October 2026.
Both routes cross into Negros Occidental, so a rental taken this way needs the "Drive Outside Negros Oriental" add-on chosen at booking. Fuel up in Bayawan and again in Kabankalan.
There is also a direct road from Bayawan to Mabinay, about 55 km and 1 hour 15 minutes, passing Niludhan Falls on the way, which lets you see the falls, the caves and Bais on a loop back to Dumaguete without leaving the province.

The southern coast and Bayawan are covered by the south coast leg of the 3-day and 5-day itineraries, which slot the falls between Siaton and Mabinay.
Getting there and parking
Everything on this page is on or beside the national highway. The Bayawan boulevard has open roadside parking; Niludhan has a roadside stop with a short walk; Basay's beach is by the fish port. Leave nothing visible in the vehicle, keep the rental's registration copy and your licence handy for the routine police checkpoints, and carry cash, as card payment is rare outside the cities.
Which vehicle to book
- Small car for two. The whole route is paved, so a Almera or Accent is economical for the 200 km round trip and comfortable on the highway.
- SUV for comfort and the side roads. A Montero 4x4 or Xpander takes the long day in its stride and copes with the mine road at Basay and any rough track down to a beach.
- Pickup or van for a cross-island trip. A Ford Ranger or a HiAce suits a group carrying on to Kabankalan and Bacolod with luggage. A scooter can do it, but at 100 km each way it is a long ride; add 20-30 percent to the times and plan the overnight.
